Companies providing remote software support for security-related vehicle components to car dealerships, car body repair shops and motorhome dealerships are required to be SERMI certified from 1 april 2024. To do so, you must first apply for certification for your company and one employee. Why SERMI certification?

Kiwa has been your trusted vehicle security certification organisation for many years. As one of the first European bodies, we are accredited for SERMI inspections. SERMI certification has several advantages. It makes working on vehicle security:

Simpler: You can log in to all manufacturers with a single login (Digidentity) to access security-related information;
More economical: Direct access to information from different vehicle manufacturers in once instead of for each brand separately;
Faster: You no longer need to submit a separate application to the manufacturer for each brand. Moreover, the procedure to get SERMI certification is shorter than the access procedures at the manufacturers;
Carefree: You are certified for a period of 5 years. During these 5 years, Kiwa will do one audit at your premises to see whether you still meet the SERMI requirements.

On-site inspection

In order to ensure that the information provided in the application is correct and that the procedural requirements are applied in day-to-day operations, at least two inspections shall be carried out during the period of validity:

One unannounced inspection;
An inspection during the last six months, at the request of the company;
In case a complaint requires an on-site inspection;
If there are deviations during the inspection, an additional visit may take place.

According to the requirements for SERMI, the employer is obliged to report to Kiwa in case of:

Changes to company details;
Dissolution of its activities;
Termination of employment of a certified employee (notification within 3 business days);
Obtaining an on-site inspection within six months of the expiry of the approval certificate.

The employee's or company's certification can be revoked if the company or employee fails to meet obligations.

During the validity period of your certificate, we will inform your company of relevant changes in regulations.

All specified sites where SERMI activities are performed should be visited for on-site inspection.

SERMI certification for the company and the employees

The SERMI standard is named after the European alliance of car manufacturers and independent car repair shops, known as the Forum for Access to Security Related Vehicle Repair and Maintenance Information (SERMI).

In the near future, new European legislation will come into force, making it mandatory for independent car repair shops, bodyshops and motorhome companies to obtain certification to continue operating in the field of all vehicle parts related to theft prevention. The same requirements will apply to organisations and employees who work remotely for independent car dealerships and deal with vehicle repair and maintenance software related to security. The SERMI certificate will bundle and replace all specific brand or manufacturer certificates. Both the company and its employees must be SERMI certified. The certification for the company is valid for all branches of the company.

* Listed prices are per 5 years, exclude VAT and include SERMI license fees. Prices are at the rates in effect for 2024.

** Kiwa reverse charges VAT on purchases outside The Netherlands. This means that Kiwa does not charge VAT but transfers it to the client outside The Netherlands. The client must pass on the VAT locally applicable on the tax return.
