Chloride analysis

Chlorides can enter reinforced concrete components in different ways. In addition to contact with chloride-containing de-icing agents (de-icing salts), enrichment through direct contact with chemical substances or combustion residues from plastics in the event of a fire are frequent causes of chloride-induced corrosion of the reinforcement.

Reinforcement corrosion caused by chlorides poses a considerable risk to load-bearing structural elements made of reinforced or prestressed concrete. Depending on the chloride concentration, chloride ions can lead to reinforcement corrosion with a significant reduction of the reinforcement diameter up to a local, complete loss of cross-section. This results in restrictions in the durability, which can also have an effect on the stability of the affected components. Knowledge of possible chloride contamination is therefore a decisive factor for the maintenance and repair of concrete structures.

Target group: Architectural offices, engineering offices and planning companies, owners and managers of buildings as well as insurance companies.

Since the effects of chloride-induced reinforcement corrosion are not visible at all or only in the final stage, preventive sampling of the concrete with regard to the total chloride content in endangered or exposed components is a decisive factor for estimating the need for repair. If chloride contamination is detected too late, cost-intensive and extensive repair measures have to be carried out.

The aim of a chloride test is to obtain information about the extent and concentration of chloride contamination. For this purpose, in addition to measuring the concrete cover in the area of the test point, drill dust samples are taken to create a chloride profile. Active corrosion processes from chloride-induced reinforcement corrosion can be localised largely without destruction with the aid of potential field measurement. The assessment of the measurement results and the already existing degree of corrosion of the reinforcement is carried out by creating sounding holes.

The examination results of our detailed expert opinions and test reports serve as a basis for the assessment of the hazard potential as well as for the expert planning and execution of suitable repair measures.
