Course introduction
Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) Level 2 Certificate in Passive Fire Protection is comprised of 4 non-consecutive training days as follows:
- 25 February 2025
- 26 February 2025
- 4 March 2025
- 5 March 2025
An examination must be booked separately via the Institution of Fire Engineers.
The training is delivered in a series of 1-day lectures ranged over a two-week period, and offers a foundation in fire safety and fire science as well as units on different forms of passive fire protection.
There will be an optional Exam Practice Day (Date TBC). This is subject to additional cost not covered by the course fees and can be booked at any time throughout the course.
Who is the course for?
This qualification will be appropriate for individuals who are directly engaged in installing passive fire protection measures or who work with equipment and materials relevant to passive fire protection measures.
The qualification is particularly relevant to the following roles:
- Senior installers of passive fire protection measures
- Team leaders/supervisors working in passive fire protection roles
- Site supervisors
- Technical sales staff
- Contract supervisors
What will delegates take away?
- Demonstrate basic understanding of fire science, and the role of passive fire protection in a holistic approach to fire safety in buildings.
- Demonstrate technical understanding of two of the following passive fire protection areas:
- Fire Protection to the structural frame of the building and flame-retardant coatings
- Fire resisting walls, floors and ceilings and fire-resistant glazing
- Fire stopping and penetration seals, cavity barriers, ductwork and dampers and the building envelope
- Fire resisting doors, industrial shutters, and associated hardware.

This intermediate level course offers a foundation in fire safety and fire science. It provides units that focus upon a selected range of Passive Fire Protection Systems as well as an understanding of Active Systems, Regulatory Guidance, CDM, CE Marking and Codes of Practice.
