EMC testing by industry

Aerospace

Aeronautical products produced for the aerospace market could be required to meet standards such as DEF-STD-59-411 for military aircraft requirements. We are able to undertake EMC tests to these standards for both the commercial and military aerospace industries.

The CAA is no longer responsible for approval of radio equipment in the UK. It now comes under 'Single European Sky' (SES) launched by the European Commission. We are able to test to standards under the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), and where necessary work with the notified body.

Civil Aviation and Military Equipment Testing Standards

Our EMC test engineers are currently able to make EMC tests to the following standards, and radio tests to existing standards:

  • EURO CAE/ED-14
  • DEF-STD-59-411
  • MIL-STD-461
Multimedia

Over the years we have specialised in EMC testing of multimedia products, for use within the multimedia industry - ranging from Audio Mixing Consoles, Audio Amplifiers, and Digital Media Recorder's to Editor's and Induction loop devices.

We have worked with consultants from the multimedia marketplace, to define EMC testing procedures.

Kiwa Electrical Compliance and DTG Testing have launched a CE Marking testing partnership, testing and certification of Digital TV and Radio Products through one service.

Automotive

As a VCA Technical Service and UKAS accredited testing laboratory No. 2360, we perform UNECE Regulation 10 ‘E’ mark testing for electrical sub-assemblies (ESA's) and components, as well as devices intended for aftermarket fitment.

We can offer testing for the automotive sector at greatly reduced lead times and can act on our customer’s behalf to obtain the approval certificate from the VCA, who are the designated Type Approval authority in charge with operating the system of automotive type approvals in the UK.

Regulation 10.06

All components and ESA which are related to the functions of:
  • direct control of the vehicle (e.g. engine, gear, brake, suspension, steering, speed limiting, driver position, driver visibility)
  • driver, passenger and other road-user protection (e.g. airbag, seat belts)
  • vehicle data bus (i.e. by blocking data transmission to other safety critical functions)
  • vehicle statutory data (e.g. tachograph, odometer) and functions which when disturbed cause confusion to the driver

...are required to be Type Approved and carry the 'E' mark. 'E' marking can also be applied voluntarily to other components and ESA's.

Automotive Certification

We can provide all the necessary information and documentation for certification, testing and reporting.

Kiwa Electrical Compliance can act on customers’ behalf enabling the VCA to issue relevant approval certificates to the customer through Kiwa Electrical Compliance rather than being directly involved, making the entire process of obtaining an E mark on automotive components more efficient and cost effective.

The certification process for E marking starts after the customer provides relevant documentation and test samples for assessment and testing:

Kiwa Electrical Compliance carries out testing on your product in line with UN-ECE Regulation 10.

Kiwa Electrical Compliance arranges the submission of all test reports/technical documentation to the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA).

VCA issues an approval certificate, subject to a satisfactory review of the submitted documents and Conformity of Production (CoP) assessment clearance has been given.

Customer can affix E mark on the product after receiving an approval number from the VCA, via Kiwa Electrical Compliance.

Medical Devices

Testing of medical devices requires a more rigorous approach than other products due to the type of environment their placed into. High risk electrical and electronic medical devices can be affected by electromagnetic interference (EMI) which can lead to potential malfunctioning causing inconvenience, and even life threating situations.

Kiwa Electrical Compliance offer a comprehensive and well-equipped testing service to perform such tests. Contact us to discuss the applicable EMC test standards and for advice on the requirements for EMC testing of medical devices.

Military Devices

Military devices must be able to withstand stringent test requirements. We can undertake many of the EMC tests to the defence standards and offer RF immunity testing up to 230 GHz for military devices. Where a specific test is outside of our scope, we can normally arrange this with one our strategic partners.

Military Testing for the UK

Kiwa Electrical Compliance has the testing capabilities to test to DEF STAN 59-411 (UK defence standard). This standard requires EMC to be considered through the whole lifecycle of the project. We can also test to commercial standards for your product to avoid duplication of test programmes.

Military Testing for Europe

Kiwa Electrical Compliance is able to test to standards under the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), and where necessary work with a notified body. We can test whether your product makes efficient use of radio spectrum necessary for the implementation of the Single European Sky EMC aspects. The 'Single European Sky' (SES) is a European Commission initiative to manage airspace in the EU.

Military Testing for USA

Kiwa Electrical Compliance is a UKAS accredited testing laboratory No. 2360 located in the UK. We are recognised around the world for our EMC and Radio testing in Europe and North America. (FCC, Registration No: 293246).

We can provide testing to MIL STD-461. This is the US Department of Defence standard that establishes design requirements for the control of electromagnetic emission and susceptibility. We can test to MIL STD-461 revisions D, E, F and the latest revision MIL STD-461 G.

Military and Aerospace Equipment Testing Standards

Our EMC test engineers are currently able to make EMC tests to the following standards:

Oil and Gas

With many years EMC testing experience we have supported the oil and gas industry in achieving compliance, increasing safety and reliability.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) can cause major safety implications for the oil and gas industry.

Offshore platforms have safety systems that monitor, provide, receive, and interpret signals from sensors and other integrated systems for unsafe conditions. Systems and plant will shut down in the event of unsafe conditions detected.

If these safety systems were to fail due to the presence of RF energy this could pose a substantial threat to personnel safety and add to the already hazardous industrial working environment and remote offshore location.

Safety and reliability elements are important and time to market is vital. Kiwa Electrical Compliance can help you achieve and maintain compliance against numerous requirements and work with you on complex projects.
