Course introduction

You’ll work through 5 modules that covers everything from the function and purpose of fire resisting door sets through to building regulations and the inspection procedure.

There will be a 1-hour multi-choice open book exam to complete at the end of the course. This will be solely based upon the content delivered throughout the day.

This course is for those who need to carry out inspections of Fire Doors as part of their daily duties, including but not limited to: Building Control Officers, Safety Inspectors, Insurers, Fire Risk Assessors, Fire Professionals, Facilities Managers, Building Wardens and Caretakers.

  • the regulations and standards applying to fire doors
  • the different types of fire door, and the importance of critical components such as door closers and hinges
  • the inspection procedure and pass/fail criteria

The syllabus includes

There are 5 modules that make up this course:

Module 1

The course starts with an overview of fire, an introduction to fire rated door sets including their function and purpose, and the importance of inspection.

Module 2

Looks briefly at the regulations, specifically the Building Regulations and Approved Document B, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order – picking up on the specific items relating to fire resisting door sets.

Module 3

Covers testing of fire doors and evidence of performance including assessments. Also covered is third party certification of door systems and door marking/labelling.

Module 4

Concentrates on all aspects of the fire rated timber door sets, including the door leaf, the frame and supporting construction, the gap (and how it’s filled) behind the frame. A detailed look at the building hardware, intumescent and smoke seals. Glazing in doors including side panels and over panels follows.

Module 5

An overview of metal fire resisting door sets, fire resisting roller shutters and how they differ from timber fire resisting door sets. Additional inspection checks specific to non-timber fire resisting door sets are discussed in this module.
