What we do
Kiwa KOAC is the independent leading company in the Netherlands for research and consultancy in the field of mobility infrastructure, with emphasis on roads, airports, dike revetments and industrial sites, such as container terminals. Our services are provided to public and private road owners who are involved with the management, design, execution and maintenance of pavements. We perform tests and research, and provide consultancy services regarding building and pavement materials, pavement constructions and pavement surfaces. The products can be classified into laboratory testing, road testing, quality support of construction works, consultancy, and research into the performance and properties of materials. Furthermore, support is offered to clients regarding pavement management, as well as training and courses.

Roads
The quality of the road network is an indication of the prosperity of a country. Roads are indispensable for economic and social relations. The road user must be sure of an unhindered, comfortable and safe road. The road infrastructure must enable timely and damage-free transport of goods. Because roads are situated in extensively inhabited areas, certainly in a country such as the Netherlands, the nuisance caused by the road must be kept to a minimum.
In the Netherlands, Kiwa KOAC has the largest concentration of road engineers, technicians, inspectors and analysts. This, along with the knowledge and experience that has been amassed over the last 50 years, allows optimum solutions to be found for almost all issues concerning the infrastructure.
We are the ideal party to support road network managers in all their activities. Motorways, provincial and local roads belong to the working area of Kiwa KOAC.
Industrial estates
Industrial estates differ from roads in terms of the great variety of user requirements and the nature and size of the loads. The optimum industrial pavement can only be achieved following compilation of a thorough list of requirements, in which not only aspects regarding the load and use are considered but also the layout, permits and environmental issues.
The design must be tailor-made. With the aid of specialized programs, Kiwa KOAC can establish the effect of all kinds of load conditions. The design criteria can therefore be composed for every application. Our knowledge of the behaviour and performance of constructions and materials enables us to design durable and sustainable solutions with a high degree of availability. Our outdoor testing can be carried out without any interference to your daily operations.
Airports
Runway quality is of great importance for safe and quick aeroplane handling. Any interference will cost the airport large sums of money, and must be prevented. Operational interference is therefore unacceptable, certainly when it is unexpected. The safety and comfort of passengers and crew is equally important. Airport managers are therefore largely involved in the maintenance, design and construction of runways.
Kiwa KOAC has been supporting airport managers in all aspects of runway and other airport pavements for many years. This includes not only providing for maintenance management systems, but also for inspection and testing of the properties of the pavements. We are also involved in structural analysis, design and specialist quality support during construction.
Dike revetments
The larger part of the primary Dutch water defence system has an asphalt revetment, which protects the dike body from erosion by currents, waves and precipitation. All dike revetments are regularly monitored and assessed for their safety.
Kiwa KOAC plays an important role in research of dike revetments and also carries out most of the inspection, testing and analysis work. This can include various forms of material testing. Our quality support is applied to optimize the starting quality of the asphalt, since this appears to be crucial for the long-term performance of the revetment.
Retail
The stability of railway tracks is influenced by the bearing capacity of the rails and ballast and the contamination of the ballast. Contaminated ballast retains moisture, which increases the risk of the stones sliding.
Kiwa KOAC is specialized in testing the quality and suitability of materials for ballast. Several techniques are available for quantification of the contamination and assessment of the quality of the sub-base.
